However, new wearers can find it challenging to eat or talk without experiencing some slippage (although veteran patients can also struggle from time to time!). Denture adhesive was designed to be a solution for this problem, and can be quite effective when you know what you’re doing.

If you don’t know how to properly use denture adhesive, don’t worry – that’s what this post is for! Keep reading for a comprehensive guide to denture adhesive.

When to Use Denture Adhesive

The first thing you need to be aware of is there’s a “right” and “wrong” time to use denture adhesive. If you find yourself using it frequently, then your dentures are probably too loose. In this situation, it’s better to visit your dentist to adjust the fit or request a replacement.

Otherwise, denture adhesive can be a good temporary solution if you:

Have dry mouth. Believe it or not, an overly dry oral biome will make it more difficult for your dentures to stay in place.

Have a talkative job. Teachers, musicians, and public speakers have to use their mouths a lot more than the average person, for example. If your occupation is disturbing your dentures, go ahead and use adhesive!

You’re still getting used to your new appliance. As stated earlier, new denture wearers can have an especially tough time with slippage.

Applying the Adhesive to Your Dentures

The proper way to apply your adhesive will depend on the type you decide to use. Here’s what you should do for each:

For all types of adhesives, be sure to clean your mouth and your dentures. It’s also important to make sure your dentures are dry before proceeding.

For cream, smooth the adhesive out over the base of your denture. As long as you don’t rub the cream too close the edge, it should provide ample suction.

For powder, lightly dust the adhesive over your denture’s base.

For strips, tear them into three small pieces and moisten one at a time. Then press them to the base.

Once you’re all set, insert your dentures and bite down for a few seconds. This will help the adhesive settle for a firmer hold!

REMOVING the Adhesive from Your Dentures

It’s not recommended to leave denture adhesive (or your dentures) in your mouth while you sleep. When you’re ready for bed, gently rock your dentures loose, brush your gums with a soft cloth and your restoration with a toothbrush, then let your dentures soak in a cleaning solution to remove any excess residue. Now give yourself a round of applause – you’ve successfully applied and removed denture adhesive!

About the Practice

Drs.
